Health ministers agree to tackle urgent health issues in the Americas at PAHO Directing Council
During the 59th Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which was convened virtually from 20-24 September, health ministers throughout the Americas adopted 13 resolutions to strengthen health policies and tackle urgent challenges, such as the erosion of routine immunization coverage and responding to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

PAHO selects centers in Argentina and Brazil to develop COVID-19 mRNA vaccines
PAHO has announced the selection of two centers in Argentina and Brazil as regional hubs for the development and production of mRNA-based vaccines in Latin America in a bid to tackle COVID-19 and future infectious-disease challenges.

At the 59th Directing Council, Director Carissa F. Etienne asserted that the “tragic march of the COVID-19 pandemic” has exposed the urgent need for investments to strengthen health systems and technology production across the Americas.

Canadian medical humanitarian wins PAHO Award for Health Services Management and Leadership
PAHO has recognized Dr. Joanne Liu of Canada for her service to public health by presenting her with the PAHO Award for Health Services Management and Leadership. The award acknowledges Dr. Liu’s outstanding contributions in the areas of medical humanitarianism and health crisis response and management, both in Canada and internationally.
